Just as not only the appetizing dish served but also the spatial ambience plays an important role in setting a perfect dinner, it is often not just the number of square meters of floor space that influence on how big or high a room appears. This means that it is not the actual floor space of a room that is decisive when it comes to making small rooms appear larger, but above all the interior design. Wrong proportions, dark colors or bulky furniture can all contribute to making a room appear “cramped” and “over-furnished.” The good news is that, with a few clever tricks, you can get a lot out of just a few square meters and make small rooms appear larger than they actually are – at least visually.
For example, there are colors that maek rooms look bigger. Lighter shades of color are a particularly good choice, lending the space “air to breath.” Such tones, combined with finely elegant furniture in minimalist design language, enhance a general sense of lightness. However, it is not just colors that play a key role in creating a harmonious interior design. Geometric shapes such as vertical stripes help to make low rooms appear higher or give them greater depth (more on this in the posting about stripes).
All in all, this means that small rooms do not necessarily have to appear cramped. When it comes to visually enlarging small or narrow rooms, it is not so much the actual floor area of the interior space that matters – but rather how it is staged.
